Abstract

The statistical correlation between the concentrations of seminal pepsinogen (Pg III) and the spermiograms of 84 normozoospermic, oligozooazoospermic subjects were studied.A large dispersion of the concentrations of Pg III was noted: ranging from 0.28 units Pg III per ejaculate (E) – the minimal value found in one polyzoospermic subject – to 31.8 units Pg III/E, the maximal value found in one oligozoospermic semen. The seminal pepsinogen levels were above 10 U Pg III/E in almost half of the cases of oligozoo‐and polyzoospermia, demonstrating and suggesting that consumption of this proenzyme may occur in inverse relationship to the number of spermatozooa. The activities of Pg III were equivalent in the different parts of fractionated ejaculates, suggesting that Pg III is produced by both the seminal vesicles and the prostate.
