Abstract

The idea of building up a new method for the determination of fluorescence lifetime using semiconductor light sources, such as laser diodes (LDs) and ultrabright light emitting diodes (LEDs), was born in 1995. It had been shown earlier that LDs and LEDs can be used as pulsed light sources in a single photon timing (SPT) setup (LD:1, LED:2). The integration of semiconductor light sources in commercial modulation fluorometers had also been demonstrated successfully3. But the main point was that all of these applications are rather expensive and difficult to handle. So a simpler setup had to be developed.
