Abstract

A general description is presented of the “position” detector and the avalanche detector including their uses and limitations. We discuss several diverse factors concerned with detector performance as charge collection, energy resolution and Fano factor, energy required to form a hole-electron pair, fission fragment pulse height defect, etc. Chapter 3 will be concerned with the considerations leading to the choice of materials for use in gamma-ray spectroscopy. Our experimental results with CdTe will be presented. Chapter 4 discusses a compendium of fabrication techniques for germanium p-i-n detectors with primary emphasis on diagnostic techniques, suitable to determine failure modes.
