Abstract

AbstractWe have developed a new symmetric Mach– Zehnder all‐optical switch (PC‐SMZ) that combines a two‐dimensional photonic crystal slab waveguide (PCWG) with a quantum dot (QD) as an optical nonlinear medium. With the PCWG we fabricated wavelength‐selective directional couplers and other kinds of waveguide parts in a 600‐µm‐long PC‐SMZ. At a wavelength of 1.3 µm, we achieved switching operations with rise/fall time of 2 ps and switching operation windows of 15 ps. In addition, in a 500‐µm‐long optical nonlinear waveguide with an embedded QD, we confirmed the occurrence of a nonlinear phase change µ shift using an extremely small optical control energy of 100 fJ. This result has opened the way toward integration of various devices that incorporate PCs and QDs, and realization of devices capable of new performance. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
