Abstract

A semiclassical treatment for heavy ion transfer reactions into the continuum is presented in the sub-Coulomb energy region. The physically important case of the deuteron break-up is investigated as a specific example. The accuracy of the method is thoroughly investigated and it is shown that the semiclassical description is in very good agreement with the quantal (DWBA) calculations of these processes. A comparison of the semiclassical method with recent experiments is given and several model calculations are presented.
