Abstract

Proton induced K shell ionization cross sections in several elements were calculated. Semiclassical approximation with momentum space approach, hydrogenic wave functions and outer screening according to the prescription of Bethe was used. Comparison with other semiclassical and Dirac-Hartree-Slater [DHS] plane wave cross sections indicates that this type of screening — largely used in plane wave methods — implies a less than 10% difference between hydrogenic and DHS cross sections for not too adiabatic collisions. For comparison between calculated and measured data, three types binding correction procedures were applied: united atom, perturbed stationary state with unrelaxed wave functions and the variational procedure at fixed internuclear distance.
