Abstract

AbstractThis paper presents two different systems for measuring the roundness deviation of bearing rings during heating and gas quenching. During heating in a furnace, laser triangulation is applied to measure absolute values for the ring's mean radius and ovality. Afterwards, the ring is quenched in a gas nozzle field equipped with a semi‐optical measurement system consisting of twelve tactile and twelve optical sensors independent from each other. Before quenching, the tactile sensors measure in‐situ the absolute mean radius of the near 900°C hot ring and its roundness deviation from ovality up to pentagonality. Based on this information, the optical sensors measure in‐process the change of the roundness deviation during the gas quenching, as the tactile sensors cannot be used in high speed gas jets due to turbulence.
