Abstract

The paper presents the results coming from about 2 years of experimentation carried out in a pilot plant digesting fresh and pre-composted mechanically sorted organic fraction of municipal solid waste (MS-OFMSW) in the thermophilic range of temperature (55°C). The process is studied using both substrates at different hydraulic retention times (HRT) and organic loading rates(OLR) in semi-dry conditions, reaching very stressing situations (HRT=6d, OLR=19.9 KgTVS/m3d). Results show the advantage of digesting fresh MS-OFMSW at low HRT (6/8 days), whereas at higher HRT (>12 days) yields improve using pre-composted MS-OFMSW.
