Abstract

Artifical recharge as a means of managing the water resources of a region has been increasingly applied during the last decade. It affects the level of the underlying groundwater as well as septic drain fields (filter fields, leach fields), which become more and more important 1. The groundwater table rises under these recharge basins or drain fields and poses engineering as well as health problems. Thus the computation of the transient mound geometry in the vicinity of recharge basins, drain fields and sanitary landrdls is a highly important step in the planning of groundwater replenishment activities and is also a must, when using the unsaturated soil zone, in which high degrees of physical, biological and chemical treatment occur, to improve the quality of the infiltrating water. the exact solution. This paper, however, only presents the principal steps and formulas of the development of the solution. The considerable mathematical framework, necessary for the derivation of the model will be discussed in a forthcoming paper. The initial condition can be an arbitrary function
