Abstract

A semi-analytical solution for hydrodynamic pressure distribution on dams with arbitrary upstream face is presented. The compressibility of water is included in the formulation. The pressure distributions in the fluid domain are expressed as the sum of functions with amplitude coefficients that satisfy all boundary conditions except at the upstream face of the dam. These coefficients are determined by using the least square method or Galerkin's method so that the residual error is minimized. Numerical results obtained compare well with available exact solutions when the compressibility of water is neglected. Hydrodynamic pressure on dams with irregular geometrical shape is also studied.
