Abstract

Semantics plays a central role in Role and Reference Grammar. The aspects of semantics in RRG that are addressed herein are (1) the lexical representation of verbs and other predicating elements, which is a system of lexical decomposition reflecting the verb's Aktionsart; (2) semantic roles, of which there are two types, specific thematic relations and generalized semantic roles called semantic macroroles; (3) the role of the lexicon in grammar; and (4) interclausal semantic relations (such as causation, purposive, jussive, and psych-action), their semantic representation, and their interaction with syntactic interclausal relations.
