Abstract

The present paper emerges from two current desiderata in both diachronic linguistics and lexicography. Despite the fact that the lexicography of obsolete words in German has flourished in the past two decades, the lemmata have been linked to solely their definition, whereas any detailed information on the cause of their archaization or on their semasiological course remain untouched upon. This lexicographic lacuna may be filled by linguistic research of the lemmata, which I am now undertaking. In this paper I am filtering the results of my analysis of Versunkene Wortschätze Österreich (Duden, 2017) and I shall highlight how some words have become obsolete due to a semantic change in their etymology as I aim to shape the paramount linguistic moments of their archaization.
