Abstract

Chapter 6 analyses the lexeme ‘citizen’ in the French, Italian, and British press. Among its findings it shows that, from a quantitative point of view, the lexeme is far more frequent in the Italian corpus than in the other two; that European citizenship is represented less frequently in the British press than in the French and Italian press; that citizenship is semantically associated with ‘rights’ in all three corpora, but with duties only in the French press; and that in all three corpora, citizenship is associated with ‘education’, though in rather different ways.
