Abstract

On the basis of 16 year-observations on a population of Actinotaenium found in temporary roadside ditches on the area of the Centraiinstitute, as well as on cultures derived from it, going on for 16 years, are described: proportions of size, the remarkable method of vegetative cell division, the zygospores (hitherto unknown), gelatinous structures and colonial unions brought about by them, teratology and survival duration. The systematic position of the two forms found in the population and differing widely from each other is discussed. There is no doubt, that the “Form II” is to assign to Actinotaenium curtum (Bréb.) Teil. var. curtum (Cosmarium curtum [Bréb.] Ralfs var. curtum), the “Form I” may belong to Actinotaenium curtum (Bréb.) Teil. var. globosumWille (Cosmarium curtum [Bréb.] Ralfs var. globosum [Wille] Petk.) hitherto not reported from the GDR and the FRG. Arguments are presented in favour of raising this variety to the rank of a species.
