Abstract
We investigate the ring pattern characteristic of self-phase modulation in liquid crystals induced by an infrared laser beam focused on a sample of E7. An evaluation of the nonlinear refractive-index coefficient n ̂ 2 is provided. The intensity profile of the ring pattern, calculated by Kirchhoff's diffraction integral, confirms the estimate of n ̂ 2 .
