Abstract

A unidirectionally ordered structure in as-deposited metallo-phthalocyanine (MPc) thin film has been successfully formed over the whole surface of sapphire (1102) substrate. This has been achieved by designing and synthesizing a novel less-symmetrical MPc, dibenzo[b, t] phthalocyaninato-Zn(II) (ZnDBPc), and by using ultra-high vacuum organic molecular beam deposition. The dichroic ratio at the Q-band peak of 661nm was more than 5. Since thin films of ordinary MPc's (ZnPc, CuPc, and TiOPc) formed by the same fabrication process did not show any dichroic properties, this unidirectional ordering is attributed to the self-ordering properties of the less-symmetrical MPc molecule. In addition, the highly ordered ZnDBPc film strongly promoted the ordering of a TiOPc thin film on it. The dichroic ratio of a unidirectionally ordered phase II crystalline TiOPc film was more than 10 at the Q band peak of 860 nm. The third-order nonlinear optical susceptibility χ(3) of this TiOPc film showed high anisotropy and the maximum χ(3) value was 3.0×10−10 esu.
