Abstract

Numerous studies have clearly demonstrated a significant association between maternal glycemic control and adverse outcomes in pregnancies complicated by gestational diabetes. However, despite our understandingof the importance of stringent glucose control in the management of these pregnancies, the definition of optimal glycemic control and monitoring protocols have yet to be firmly established. This articlereviews current evidence regarding the efficacy of self-monitoring of blood glucose in the management of gestational diabetes. The role of various self-monitoring protocols and their impact on outcome isalso explored. Areas where further investigations are needed in terms of glucose assessment are highlighted.
