Abstract

Self-management is hypothesised as the unifying theme which underlies various new flexible working arrangements. It constitutes a relatively new ingredient for planning and forecasting of organisational changes. The authors maintain that the emerging flexible system can help man derive satisfaction from work, and they suggest how it may improve individual, organisational and societal life styles. The results of recent developments described in the article show that they appear to be the same regardless of culture. The authors argue that flexible systems will necessitate a profound change in the concepts of specialisation, standardisation and economies of scale which evolved from scientific management and no longer seem appropriate.
