Abstract

High stability opto-electronic oscillators (OEO) are attained using self-forced oscillation techniques using long optical delays. A fully integrated solution using Si photonics (SiP) are more environmentally stable and amenable to large volume manufacturing. Free-running InP based multi-mode laser diodes with free-spectral range (FSR) of 11.7 GHz is stabilized using self-optical injection-locked (SOIL) and self-electrical injection-locked (SEIL) approaches; free-running OEO phase noise of-52 dBc/Hz at 10 kHz offset was improved by 13 dB and 17 dB using optical delay of 5 µs for SOIL and SEIL approaches, respectively. Calculated timing jitter of SEIL based OEO is reduced from 23.7 ps for 500 ns optical delays to 1.2 ps for 25 µs. A heterogeneously integrated MML combined with SEIL function is designed on an approximately 5 cm × 10 cm SiP chip using 325 ns time delay, which is realizable by an order 50 of cascaded add-drop filter (ADF) resonators.
