Abstract

Evidence for self-focusing in gas breakdown produced by short nanosecond laser pulses has been obtained by a Schlieren technique and by transmission measurements. In addition, the dependence of the breakdown threshold on the characteristics diffusion length has been measured for two pulse lengths (1.6 nsec and 40 nsec) and it is shown that the results do not agree with the usual formulation of the cascade theory.
