Abstract

Self-ligating brackets have important benefits that may contribute to the efficiency of lingual orthodontic treatment: reduced friction and faster alignment, improved oral hygiene, improved clinical efficiency, and time saving. These attributes of self-ligating brackets address the main difficulties of the lingual technique. The different self-ligating brackets used for lingual orthodontics are discussed as well as bracket positioning techniques. Two patient examples treated with the Adenta Evolution (Adenta GmbH, Gliching, Germany) brackets demonstrate the potential of self-ligating brackets to improve and simplify the lingual technique, reducing the treatment time, chairside time, and the mechanical difficulties. Patient comfort with the self-ligating lingual brackets has still to be improved.
