Abstract

In view of the many potential benefits for antiferromagnetic spintronic devices, we investigated the magneto-transport properties of the self-intermetallic α-Mn through Fe and Al doping. Epitaxial α-Mn structure type alloy films consisting of Mn, Fe, and Al were grown on a MgO(001) substrate by molecular beam epitaxy. We used zero-field- and field-cooling Hall resistivity and magnetoresistance measurements of the films to reveal a spin-glass transition at low temperature. The films also exhibited high-field irreversibility and shifted hysteresis loops after field cooling below their freezing temperature. The above observations indicate spin-glass behavior in this system, which might be triggered by magnetic frustration owing to competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions and magnetic site disorder.
