FELKER, DONALD W., and THOMAS, SUSAN BAHLKE. Self-initiated Verbal Reinforcement and Positive Self-Concept. CHILD DEVELOPMENT, 1971, 42, 1285-1287. 4 hypotheses were derived from the proposition that positive selfconcept is due partly to an ability to utilize self-initiated verbal reinforcement. 3 of the 4 hypotheses were supported in a sample of 66 boys and 65 girls, all of whom were white fourth-grade pupils.
