Abstract
This article makes a theoretically relevant contribution to the understanding of the interplay between institutions and individual agency in self-initiated expatriation of highly skilled professionals. It advances scholarly knowledge about self-initiated expatriates’ (SIEs) strategies of engaging their institutional environments to cope with and further expatriation and career processes. The article reports the findings of a field-based interview study of SIEs in Denmark with ties to an expatriate institution. The differential strategies of navigating and acquiring support from the same institution, in terms of participation in a host country expatriate institution (HCEI), have different, yet important implications for the SIE process. A novel conceptual imagery for researching self-initiated expatriation emanates from this study, depicting the global mobility of SIEs as a multi-level process. We thus construct and explore a typology which offers a range of distinct opportunities for the study of how institutional support appears in and influences SIEs’ global mobility and careers.
