Abstract

The Coopersmith Self-Esteem Inventory (SEI) Form B was administered to 450 elementary children identified as gifted, normal, and mild mentally handicapped (MiMH). The teachers also rated the children's levels of self-esteem, using the Self-Esteem Rating Scale for Children (SERSC). The results showed that, on the SEI Form B, both the gifted and normal children had significantly higher self-esteem than did the MiMH children, but there were no differences between the gifted and normal children. On the SERSC, teacher ratings of self-esteem were significantly higher for the gifted than for the normal and the MiMH children, and significantly higher for the normal than for the MiMH children.
