Abstract

In the first part of this paper, the self-dual formalism is developed for electromagnetic fields in an isotropic, homogeneous, lossless chiral material endowed with the Post constitutive relations. This formalism is afterwards used to analyze harmonic wave propagation in planar and cylindrical waveguides of arbitrary cross section. The second part is devoted to self-dual fields in media with a permittivity variable in a direction. As an application, harmonic plane wave propagation in ionosphere and in a medium with periodic permitivity is analyzed.
