Abstract

The diffusion coefficients of dodecyltributylammonium bromide and water in binary mixtures in the one-phase region of the phase diagram have been measured using pulsed-gradient spin-echo Fourier transform NMR. Diffusion in solutions containing a hydrophobic probe molecule solubilized into the micelles was also followed. Solutions were found to be micellar at all concentrations up to 60 wt% surfactant. Results are discussed using the conventional two-state model and monomer surfactant concentrations are calculated and compared with previous results. Breakdown of this model at high micelle volume fractions, and particularly in the presence of intermicellar attractions in the vicinity of the phase boundary, is discussed in light of the present results.
