Abstract

This paper describes and evaluates a training program designed for and by mental health advisory~governing board members. A group fo 14 persons representing 11 different boards and the major ethnic and economic groups in an urban community participated in program planning. This group selected the content, format, and intensity of the curriculum and suggested consultant~facilitators. A total of 40 trainees in four separate groups participated in the advisory~governing board curriculum. Participants gave superior ratings to each of the nine items evaluating the training session. Pre and post content-retention measures administered to two of the training groups indicated that each group significantly increased percent of answers correct. Respondents to the interviews stated that their training was useful and that it influenced member, board, and center functioning irrespective of years on board, type of board, officer status, and training group membership.
