Abstract

Abstract The addition of photoactive titanium dioxide to a coatings formulation leads to self-cleaning coatings. The activity can be tested using e. g. the methylene blue test. The photocatalytic effect impairs classical formulations under side reactions leading to yellowing, chalking and bleaching. Recent formulations overcome the side reactions to a good extend. The development of highly photoactive coatings showing a minimum of side reactions is still in progress.
