Abstract

We fabricated large-area films of colloidal photonic crystals (PC) from polystyrene (PS) beads and Rhodamine B (RB) dyes. The films contain ordered PC domains separated by cracks. The size of the domains and cracks can be controlled by the drying process. We found a pronounced stop-band for all ordered structures and estimated the Bragg attenuation length, L B, to be of the order of ∼2 μm. We demonstrate that the photoluminescence (PL) emission spectra depend on the PC domain size and on the concentration of cracks and other defects. For a film with small density of cracks, we observed light channeling through cracks probably due to light inhibition.
