Abstract
Although the adequate intake of Se is very important in decreasing the risks of various chronic diseases, studies on Se status in Korean people are rare. Our previous study has shown that Se status in adults is declined with increasing age. And several recent studies found that Se can affect the neurodegenerative function in human. The serum Se content is well known indicator for Se intake and increases with the elevated Se consumption. This study was aimed to compare the Se status of cognitively declined patients with general Korean elderly and to analyze the relationship of Se Status with cognitive function. The serum Se level in patients with MCI or dementia was compared to those of general elderly without cognitive impairment. The serum Se content was analyzed using INAA with a unique Korean research reactor. The precision of INAA in Se analysis was proved using NIST CRM. The GPx activity in RBC was measured using Kit. A tool for assessing the cognitive function of elderly, KMMSE score was used. Although the serum Se levels of elderly were in normal range and low in cognitively declined subjects. It correlated with KMMSE score in aged people.
