Abstract
Black marlin from the apparently unpolluted waters off north-eastern Australia have the highest muscle and liver concentrations of total mercury yet reported for a teleost species. Selenium concentrations are also high. There is a significant correlation between mercury and selenium concentrations, and concentrations of both those elements are significantly correlated to size of fish. Concentrations of cadmium, lead, zinc, copper or arsenic are not so correlated. The results of this study indicate there is a need for a moratorium on the use of this species for human consumption.
