Abstract

The withdrawal of stably stratified fluids through a vertical intake terminating inside one layer is considered. A theoretical limit is obtained for the withdrawal rate at which nearby layers are entrained in the presence of interfacial waves. Experiments are described using circular and rectangular intakes which are in reasonable agreement with the theory.
