Abstract

Two important applications of spectrally selective thin film coatings for the efficient conversion of solar radiation are solar absorber surfaces and transparent heat mirrors. The nature of these selective materials is reviewed and the physical processes responsible for spectral selectivity are examined. Optical properties of the surface coatings are defined and experimentally determined values are quoted. The use of effective medium theories and the dielectric functions for the modelling of surface optical properties are discussed.
