Abstract

Cushing’s disease is caused by adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) and/or Cortisol hypersecretion due to a variety of underlying diseases. About 70% of the patients have ACTH hypersecretion, originating from the pituitary gland in about 90% and from non-pituitary, ectopic sources in 10 to 15% of the cases (1). Primary adrenal adenomas and adrenal carcinomas with Cortisol hypersecretion can be responsible for Cushing’s syndrome in about 20% and 5 to 10%, respectively (2).
