Abstract

ABSTRACT An N-isopropylacrylamide(NIPA) gel can swell and shrink in response to temperature and pH, and metal ion adsorption using NIPA gel containing N,N,N’,N’-tetrakis(2-methylpyridyl)ethylenediamine(TPEN) derivatives also follows this behavior. Here, we prepare novel TPEN-type-NIPA gel-coated porous silica particles with high TPEN content. The particles are highly effective in selective separation; they exhibit high selectivity to Cd(II) at pH 2, at low temperature. The novel TPEN-type-NIPA gel-coated porous silica particles exhibit a high Am(III)/Eu(III) separation factor of ~14 at pH 4, at which the selectivity to Am(III) is high. Hence, these particles will aid in the extraction of Am(III).
