Abstract
Methods to exploit the large dipole-dipole interactions among protons in magneto-aligned liquid crystals are described. These allow simultaneous determination of the spin-lattice relaxation rates of the Zeeman and dipolar reservoirs. In particular, a selected group of spins whose dipolar splitting is significantly different from those of the other spin groups may be selectively excited to monitor its relaxation rates. It is demonstrated that cross relaxation effects exist among different spin subgroups in the nematic liquid crystal MBBA.
