Abstract

Communication News Briefs Promising developments in communicating to the deaf were discussed by Minister of Communications Jeanne Sauve at a recent national convention of the Canadian Cultural Society of the Deaf. The Federal Government at a total cost of $700, 000, is sponsoring the development of a device known as the Visual Ear. This portable equipment about the size of a hard cover book makes it possible for those with difficulty in speech and hearing to use telephones. Messages are typed on a small keyboard and then displayed on a similar device connected to the telephone of the party being called. The Visual Ear is expected to be available early next year at an estimated cost of $300-$400.
