Abstract

Friction stir welding has become one of the most reliable and efficient welding processes, as it is capable of joining a wide variety of dissimilar materials, environmental benefits, high strength welded joints and ecological safety. For effective use of the FSW process, it is often required to set its various process parameters to their optimal levels. Previous researchers have proposed various mathematical models that serve the desired purpose by optimizing the process parameters. In this article, the FSW process parameters have been optimized using the particle swarm optimization (PSO) algorithm, and its performance has been evaluated. Single and multi-objective optimizations are performed using the PSO algorithm and compared with previously published results. It is observed that the results obtained from the proposed algorithm of the PSO approach have better optimal results than the desirability-based method.
