Abstract

Brassica napus (2n=18) is a species which has been originated one or a few times during evolution by natural crossing events between B. oleracea (2n=18) and B. campestris (2n=20). Only a small percentage of the total genetic variability inherent in the parental species has been introduced into rapeseed. Additionally, recent plant breeding again narrowed its genetic diversity. Therefore, resynthesis of rapeseed from its parental species B. oleracea and B. campestris is highly desirable. One way to achieve this object is the somatic hybridization by fusion of protoplasts from B. oleracea and B. campestris.
