Abstract

The selection of endoscopic techniques for emergency treatment is controversial. Already 13 years have passed since we employed electrocoagulation with a unipolar electrode to treat upper GI bleeding. After trying out many new methods, laser beam coagulation, bipolar electrocoagulation, and alcohol injection were developed. However, there are few reports of a real comparative study on their efficacy from the view point of scientific analysis. Most publications base the claims for their efficacy on impressions gained in small numbers of patients. Further problems remain with regard to the question of cost effectiveness. To clarify this fundamental comparative problem, we have analyzed two approaches for accomplishing hemostasis
