Abstract

In the design of a modern warship, operational effectiveness must be balanced against cost, reliability and maintainability. This article illustrates the extent to which the design process affects the selection of materials employed in the construction of the latest class of anti-submarine warfare ship, the Type 23, and emphasises the increasing extent that cost plays.
