Abstract

A new method is proposed in this paper to select installing locations of Flywheel Energy Storage Systems (FESS) in multimachine power systems. FESS consists of a large-mass varying-speed energy storage flywheel and a double-fed induction machine (DFIM). When FESS are used to damp power system oscillations it would be more flexible, more effective and more efficient. FESS can be installed in the power network or/and power generation sites. Hence, selection of installing locations of FESS cannot be completely similar to selection of installing locations of PSS in multimachine power systems. The method is demonstrated on a sample four-machine power system for the selection of installing location of FESS in multimachine power systems.
