Abstract

Western equine virus isolated from a wild bird was cloned by plating on chick embryo cells, and passage was made from the clone with the least pathogenicity for young adult mice. After five passages in this manner the virus was nonpathogenic for young adult mice. However, when this strain of virus was passaged serially in infant mice, using the intracerebral route of inoculation, there was a gradual reversion to pathogenicity for young adult mice.
