Abstract
Abstract The focus of this paper is upon the need for congruence between the selection experience of intending social work students and the principles for practice presented to them in professional training. It was inspired by a valuable preceding paper by Barbara Symons and Caroline Morgan on the subject of selection for social work training, and it seeks to share a contrasting model of practice for consideration. Whilst this paper reaffirms the importance the previous authors attribute to their four themes fundamental to the selection process, the main concern of this response to Symons and Morgan is to place firm emphasis upon the importance of selectors accepting accountability for the judgements and decisions they make at interview. It is argued that applicants should be told of the outcome before departure and given an opportunity to discuss, and reflect upon, the implications of the selectors' decision.
