Abstract

The effectiveness in development of maize progenies resistant to leaf feeding by Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner) was compared in selection under conditions of artificial infestation and selection on the basis of DIMBOA content in leaf whorl tissue. Selections were made in 3 successive inbreeding generations, starting with 198 F3 progenies from WF9×CI31A. WF9 is highly susceptible and CI31A is highly resistant. Final evaluations were of 15 F5 families in the DIMBOA group and 86 F5 families in the leaf-feeding group. All families in the DIMBOA group were borer-resistant and 8 progenies were not significantly different from CI31A for DIMBOA content. Sixty-five families in the leaf-feeding group were resistant, but only fifteen were not significantly different from CI31A for DIMBOA content. The data indicated that factors other than DIMBOA condition resistance to leaf feeding by the European corn borer.
