Abstract

The plight of qualified nurse students seeking their university education is well known in North America. In this study the post basic degree programmes in the United Kingdom are described; in particular the approaches used by the teaching staff in selecting, organising and presenting the content and the student attitude toward the approaches. A descriptive survey design was used. The findings of the study indicate that the qualified nurses entering the first degree programmes are a heterogeneous group who are highly motivated and have already gained knowledge through life and work experience. On the other hand, they are also burdened with a high degree of anxiety and fear such as attitudinal change, cultural shock, coping with academic life and loss of friendship due to conflict at work with their peers.
