Abstract

In this issue of The Annals of Thoracic Surgery, in their review of the latest National Residency Matching Program’s report coupled with survey data from more than half of the country’s 6-year Integrated Thoracic Surgery (I-6) residency program directors, Obafemi and colleagues1 explore the ever-intensifying process of securing a training position in the field of cardiothoracic surgery. Whereas the metrics speak for themselves (average United States Medical Licensing Examination scores continue to rise, research experiences surpass those of applicants to any other specialty), excellence in these aspects on the part of a candidate can now be viewed only as a prerequisite for consideration.
