Abstract
Selecting appropriate leg bags for people who use sheaths may be a difficult task for community nurses given the large number of leg bags available. Guidance on product selection is available through the Continence Products Evaluation (CPE) Network. The CPE Network carries out multicentre evaluations for the Medical Devices Agency (MDA), and produces reports on product performance for users and prescribers of products. The five non-sterile 500–700ml leg bags for urine drainage available in the UK were evaluated between May and October 1997. This supplemented a previous evaluation of 14 sterile leg bags which was completed in 1996 (MDA, 1996). Each leg bag was evaluated by 29–31 male sheath users based in the community. Each leg bag was tested for 1 week and each user kept a diary to record urine leakage. At the end of the week a product evaluation form was filled in to record product performance. The leg bags tested had different strengths and limitations. This evaluation provides a basis for making appropriate product selections for users and prescribers.
