He received his M.S. degree in nuclear engineering from Seoul National University in 1982 and earned his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1986. He had been a vice-president of planning at POSTECH and was inaugurated as the president of the Korea Institute of Nuclear Safety in 2013. His current interests in research are varied, from fundamentals of two-phase flow and phase-change heat transfer to nuclear safety and its application. Especially, his interests includes the boiling and condensation heat transfer on micro-/nanostructured surfaces and severe accidents in nuclear power plants, such as quenching of a nuclear fuel clad, external reactor vessel cooling, debris bed coolability, and steam explosion. He is an associate editor for Heat Transfer Engineering.
